I make it to Einstein’s with a few minutes to spare, so I get in line to order an iced vanilla latte. I need something, anything that will help calm my nerves. I feel like I could throw up on the lady in front of me, and I look down at my hands to see them shaking with nerves. Before I left the hotel and parted ways with Kyle, he asked once again if I wanted him to come with me. I desperately wanted to say yes but knew this was something I needed to do on my own. He told me that after everything she put me through, I don’t owe her anything, which I know is true.

I grab my coffee from the end of the counter and thank the barista. As soon as I turn toward the tables, I see the woman I’ve only looked at in pictures since I was a little girl. My breath catches, and I nearly fall into an older man sitting at one of the small tables.

“Sorry,” I mumble before making my way to her. The distance between us seems like a lifetime, even though the restaurant isn’t big by any means.

Once I’m finally standing in front of Jasmine, I’m not sure if I want to hug or slap her. Her long, dark brown hair flows freely over her shoulders, her curls very similar to mine. Familiar eyes look back at me. The same eyes I see every time I look in the mirror. She’s dressed in a navy skirt suit and has rings covering each of her fingers. She’s not dressed for lunch at a sandwich shop, and part of me wonders if she always dresses this way or if she did this just for me.

“Mackenzie,” she says before pulling me into her arms. At first, I freeze in her embrace but slightly relax and then take in her scent, trying to burn it into my brain. I don’t know if I’ll ever see her again after today. I’d like to think I will, but I’ve also learned that I can’t rely on her to be what I’ve wanted or needed over the years.

“I’ve missed you, darling,” she says as she pulls away from me, her hands resting on both my shoulders.

I answer with a small smile and nod, because I don’t believe her for one second.

“Should we grab a table?” I point to an empty booth in the corner of the diner. We’ll have a little privacy, but I’m hoping she won’t feel too comfortable out in public talking about anything touchy.

She follows me and takes the seat directly across from me.

“So…” I say, breaking the silence. You could cut the tension between us with a butter knife. It’s taking everything inside of me to hold myself together, to keep myself from running back to the hotel to be with Kyle. I’d much rather be with him right now.

“Have you enjoyed your week here?” she asks as I have my head down, fidgeting with the strap of my purse.
